Things to Do in Downtown Los Angeles

Olvera Street
Directly across from Union Station is Olvera Street which is the center of DTLA’s Mexican heritage. This small block-long street branches off of a plaza that used to be the heart of the original Spanish town in DTLA and is also home to many of the oldest dwellings in the area.
It’s filled with craft shops and traditional restaurants that smell amazing when you walk by. There are also a few museums, including Avila Adobe which was constructed in 1818 and is one of the oldest houses in Los Angeles. Other historic sites include the Pelanconi House and Sepulveda House.
Another cool thing to do here is to watch the Blessing of the Animals at night. This is a tradition that dates back to 1930 and incorporates pre-Columbian, Aztec, and Mayan rituals around death. Afterwards, head to the central pavilion for a variety of events that happen throughout the year.
Chinatown
From herbal shops to antique stores, Chinatown is a hidden treasure that’s best explored on guided walking tours. The neighborhood’s historic temples, restaurants and more offer a cultural experience unlike any other.
Across from the neon glow of Chinatown Central Plaza, the well-worn Hollywood backlot-esque appearance of Chung King Road belies its vibrant cultural scene. This pedestrian alleyway transforms into a frenzy of activity during Saturday night gallery openings. Afterward, stop at Steep to try the area’s creative tea-infused alcoholic cocktails.
The Chinese American Museum on North Los Angeles Street offers an inside look at the cultural and historical experiences of one of America’s largest Asian populations. During your visit, check out the exhibits on traditional art and culture as well as the community’s historic and contemporary struggles.
MOCA
DTLA is home to some of the city’s most impressive cultural crown jewels. Visit Walt Disney Concert Hall, which hosts world-renowned musicians, or catch a show at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Ahmanson Theatre, or Mark Taper Forum. The Broad and MOCA are also located within walking distance.
