DCN is not one of Bismarck-Mandan’s most widely recognized acronyms. However, given the changes happening within the company behind those three letters, it very well may become one.
DCN stands for Dakota Carrier Network; a North Dakota-based broadband service
While the company’s headquarters is in Fargo, their Network Operations Center is located right here in Bismarck. In order to keep up with increasing demand, in 2012 DCN constructed their current Network Operations Center at 4202 Coleman Street in north Bismarck. That demand hasn’t slowed down and now, the company is moving ahead with a 30,000 square foot expansion that will provide 12 times the current server floor space. The $6 million project, which will mirror DCN’s state-of-the-art secure facility in Fargo, is currently under construction and is expected to be complete by early 2017.
Prior to this expansion, DCN was already the largest co-location data center operator in North Dakota. However, this expansion will add even more data center space for their customers who can select private suites for their equipment or specific cabinets for their specific business application. The facility will also offer state-of-the-art security including: multiple levels of security, biometric fingerprint scanners, personalized combination locking cabinets and 24/7 monitoring with a closed caption TV video surveillance system. What’s more is that both the existing building and the expansion are built to “Fort Knox”-like specifications that allow it to withstand F4 tornado-force winds!
Companies like DCN and projects like this most recent expansion are further proof that technology companies can locate and thrive in our community while at the same time, bringing even more diversity to our local economy. And that’s great news for everyone!
